This herb rice recipe makes regular appearances in our home. It doesn’t take much longer than making plain rice, but adds some pizzazz to your rice dish.
Whether serving with grilled or baked chicken, seafood, or grilled vegetables, you won’t be disappointed. This is an extremely versatile and easy side dish.
Variations on Herb Rice
Use whatever type of rice you like best, as there are no rules here. We typically make herbed wild rice, but herbed jasmine rice is also delicious. Garlic and herb basmati rice or brown rice are other options.
We prefer to use fresh herbs, however, this can be made with dried herbs when in a time crunch or fresh is not readily available.
Feel free to add a vegetable such as sautéed mushroom or grilled asparagus if serving with meat or seafood.
To make this a dairy free side dish, eliminate the sprinkle of parmesan and use a vegan butter.
Is Rice an Herb?
Rice is not an herb, it is the seed of a grass species called Oryza sativa. Although originally from Asia, rice can be from an African Species of grass and can be grown almost anywhere.

Garlic and Herb Rice
Ingredients
- 2 tsp butter
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 cup wild rice uncooked
- 1½ cups water
- ¼ tsp salt
- 2-3 tbsp green onions (green tops) thinly sliced
- 2 tsp chopped basil
- 1 tsp thyme
- 2 tbsp fresh parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Melt butter in saucepan over medium heat.
- Add garlic and saute for one minute to release flavor and aroma.
- Add rice and stir to coat.
- Increase heat to high, add water and salt and bring to boil.
- Cover and reduce heat to simmer for 20 minutes.
- Stir in onions, basil and thyme.
- Serve with a sprinkle of parmesan cheese on top.
